“Last Words” is a devotional guide for the seven weeks leading up to Easter. Each section is a week-long reflection on one of Christ’s last seven utterances as he was dying on the cross. In these seven “last words” we encounter a Savior who is simultaneously strong and weak, confident and frail, hopeful and hopeless, God and man.
Each section is comprised of scripture, poetry, prose, visual art, devotional prompts, and questions to inspire you as you reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus.
This book highlights original writing and art created by members of the Seventh-day Adventist congregation in San Luis Obispo, CA, combined with other devotional material in the Christian tradition.
This full color book is perfect for devotionals, small groups, classes, sermon support, and gifts.
“A very worthy devotional.”
“A rich collection of art, scripture, poetry, and prose to accompany us through the Lenten season.”
“The compilations are thought-provoking and draw on various sources to bring Christ’s last words to life.”
“Your Easter devotional guide is excellent! Thank you. I placed it in our church prayer room for our 24-hour Easter prayer vigil. Several people have said they liked it very much and asked if they could get a copy.”
This devotional guide was originally produced by and for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in downtown San Luis Obispo, California as part of their 2014 Easter series, “Last Words.”
Members of the congregation were asked to submit original writing and artwork for each of the seven last utterances of Jesus on the cross. They submitted poetry, prose, sculpture, photography, drawings, and paintings that expressed their feelings and understandings of these events – making them real and visceral in our current context.
Pastor Jay L. Perry compiled and edited the material, along with other writings and art from the Christian tradition, into book form and wrote the opening commentary for each section. Pastor Joshua Thompson wrote the closing commentary for each section, along with the devotional prompts and questions.
This work would not have been possible without the creativity and work of many different contributors from the San Luis Obispo Seventh-day Adventist Church congregation: Jill Broeckel, Doug Costa, Larry Downing, Shantal Gonzalez, Nancy Hiett, Danny Jaramillo, Yvonne Macias, Marjorie Martinez, Kendra Perry, Adela Soo, Craig van Rooyen, and Smuts van Rooyen
